Background

Nearly 12% of the American Indian population, on and off the reservation is currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, more than any other minority or ethnic group. Despite the high level of patriotism and honorable service, when the Native American veterans return to the reservation, they find little or no access to accredited Veterans Service Officers. There are few if any accredited VSOs on the reservations to whom veterans can go for representation in order to obtain compensation for service related injuries or illness, or advocacy for other service related issues, such as discharge upgrading and discharge boards.

VA Health Care facilities are non-existent because of the remoteness of the reservations from VA facilities or clinics. Consequently, military veterans usually look to Indian Health Service (IHS) facilities and health care providers for their medical needs. However, IHS providers are ill-equipped to deal with or treat the residuals of combat related trauma or disease entities. As a result, the tribal member does not receive adequate treatment for their service related medical problems, to which each veteran is entitled as a matter of law.

Who We Are

The Native American Veterans Initiative has been formed to allow all Indian Nations, tribes, and members who have served in the military, equal access to facilities, care, and compensation provided to other veterans.
